Consumer discretionary sector faces earnings pressure
Dow +262.79 at 47894.58, Nasdaq -217.40 at 23741.10, S&P -28.01 at 6862.57

[BRIEFING.COM] The S&P 500 (-0.4%) and Nasdaq Composite (-0.9%) remain firmly lower as mega-cap and tech names underperform, while the DJIA (+0.5%) widens its gain for the day.

Mega-caps have already seen some modest buy-the-dip interest since their opening retreats, with the Vanguard Mega Cap Growth ETF (-0.8%) shedding a chunk of its early loss.

The consumer discretionary sector (-1.3%) still holds the widest loss. In addition to weakness in its mega-cap components, the sector faces pressure from Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG 32.86, -6.90, -17.34%), which trades sharply lower to multi-year lows after reporting in-line results and warning of full-year comparable restaurant sales declines in the low-single-digit range.

eBay (EBAY 86.23, -13.31, -13.37%) also slides after beating earnings expectations but guiding Q4 EPS below consensus.
