Airline stocks trade higher as end to shutdown nears
Dow +309.77 at 48237.52, Nasdaq -164.92 at 23303.40, S&P -11.82 at 6834.78

[BRIEFING.COM] The major averages are little changed from previous levels at midday.

CNN reports that House Speaker Mike Johnson is "very optimistic' the government funding bill will pass tonight.

An imminent end to the shutdown is a strong tailwind for airline names, which have faced cancellations due to air traffic controller shortages.

Delta Air Lines (DAL 59.50, +1.76, +3.04%) had some 2000 cancellations last week, but trades higher today after CEO Ed Bastain told CNBC that air traffic should be "close to normal" by Saturday as long as the government reopens.

United Airlines (UAL 98.48, +3.53, +3.72%) and Southwest Air (LUV 33.00, +1.01, +3.16%) are also higher, contributing to the industrial sector's (+0.6%) gain.
