[BRIEFING.COM] The S&P 500 (+0.2%) continues holding a modest gain with eight sectors trading higher, led by energy (+1.5%).

The energy sector has extended this week's sector-leading gain to 5.2% thanks to an extension of this week's rally in oil amid reports that OPEC+ is failing to reach its extra output target. WTI crude is up $1.35, or 2.1%, at $66.34/bbl, reaching its best level since early August. Oil is now up $3.93, or 6.3%, for the week after bouncing off its September low.

Just about every component of the sector trades higher with Marathon Petroleum (MPC 200.64, +4.20, +2.14%), Valero (VLO 177.11, +2.69, +1.54%), Phillips 66 (PSX 141.05, +1.97, +1.41%), Baker Hughes (BKR 50.68, +0.58, +1.16%), and Williams Companies (WMB 63.91, +0.60, +0.95%) reaching fresh 52-week highs.
