[BRIEFING.COM] The major averages remain near session lows in the early afternoon, with airline stocks facing particularly sharp selling pressure as elevated fuel costs and accelerating inflation raise concerns about profitability and consumer demand.

American Airlines (AAL 11.76, -0.74, -5.88%), United Airlines (UAL 98.24, -4.99, -4.83%), Delta Air Lines (DAL 76.42, -3.16, -3.97%), Southwest Air (LUV 39.32, -1.34, -3.28%), American Airlines (AAL 11.77, -0.73, -5.84%), and JetBlue Airways (JBLU 3.08, -0.26, -7.91%) are all posting sizable losses. Brent crude oil trading near $106 per barrel is adding to concerns about fuel expenses, which have already prompted Delta to lower its FY26 earnings guidance.

Meanwhile, September's CPI report showed airfares rising 22.4% year-over-year, reflecting airlines' efforts to offset higher operating costs through ticket prices. However, further fare increases could weigh on travel demand, particularly as accelerating inflation and the prospect of higher interest rates place additional pressure on consumers' discretionary spending.
