Small-cap and mid-cap stocks underperforming
Dow -314.30 at 51206.89, Nasdaq -108.58 at 27512.25, S&P -18.43 at 7800.60

[BRIEFING.COM] The recovery from the morning lows remains concentrated in large-cap stocks. The S&P 500 is down 0.2% after falling as much as 0.7%, while mega-cap growth stocks, viewed through the Vanguard Morningstar Mega Cap Growth ETF (MGK 94.88, -0.23, -0.24%), have moved well off their lows.

That improvement has not spread meaningfully to smaller companies. The Russell 2000 is down 1.1%, and the S&P MidCap 400 is down 1.5%, with both still relatively close to their session lows. The divergence is consistent with investors favoring larger companies that are generally less sensitive to financing conditions while borrowing costs remain elevated.

The 10-year Treasury yield has reversed sharply from its earlier high of 5.36% and now sits at 5.28%, up just one basis point from yesterday's settlement. The pullback accelerated following a strong 10-year note reopening, but small- and mid-cap stocks have continued to languish.

Breadth figures convey the underperformance. Decliners lead advancers by a better than 3-to-1 margin at the NYSE and by a better than 2-to-1 margin at the Nasdaq.
