[BRIEFING.COM] The S&P 500 (+0.3%), Nasdaq Composite (+0.5%), and DJIA (+0.1%) are modestly higher as tech stocks bounce off yesterday's retreats. The information technology sector (+1.0%) leads the advance, supported by a 1.7% gain in the PHLX Semiconductor Index as a host of semiconductor and computer hardware names occupy the top spots on the S&P 500 leaderboard.

The early tech bounce is somewhat rotational in nature, as several of yesterday's top performers, including the consumer staples (-1.9%) and financials (-04%) sectors, lag this morning despite a dearth of headlines.

Meanwhile, the energy sector (-1.3%) continues to move lower as crude oil retreats, currently down $2.59 (-3.0%) to $82.42 per barrel.

Just released, the Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index decreased to 89.4 in August (Briefing.com consensus: 90.6) from an downwardly revised 90.2 (from 90.8) in July.

New home sales decreased 10.5% month-over-month in July to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 607,000 (Briefing.com consensus: 620,000) from an upwardly revised 678,000 (from 628,000) in June.
