[BRIEFING.COM] The S&P 500 (-0.5%), Nasdaq Composite (-0.7%), and DJIA (-0.9%) are a touch off their session lows at midday. The consumer discretionary sector (-1.5%) is the worst-performing S&P 500 sector amid persistent concerns about inflation pressuring consumer-company profit margins. The group is down 4.3% in September and remains the worst-performing sector this year with a 4.7% decline in 2026.
Homebuilders are also contributing to the weakness as Treasury yields continue to rise, with the iShares U.S. Home Construction ETF (ITB) down 1.4% and approaching its lowest close since mid-May.
Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG 34.84, -2.20, -5.93%) and Carvana (CVNA 68.02, -2.84, -4.01%) are among the sector's more pronounced laggards, with CMG falling back toward its 50-day (35.13) and 200-day (35.00) moving averages and Carvana slipping below its 50-day moving average (69.33).
